Black Letter Outline: Adminstrative Law
This title in the Black Letter Series is designed to help a law student recognize and understand the basic principles and issues of law covered in a law school course. It can be used both as a study aid when preparing for classes and as a review of the subject matter when studying for an examination.  Each Black Letter book is written by experienced law school teachers who are recognized national authorities in the subject covered.  The law is succinctly stated by the author of this Black Letter book. In addition, the exceptions to the rules are stated in the text. The rules and exceptions have purposely been condensed to facilitate quick and easy recollection. For and in-depth study of a point of law, citations to major student texts are given. In addition, a Text Correlation Chart provides a convenient means of relating material contained in the Black Letter to appropriate sections of the casebook the student is using in his or her law school course.

Casenotes Legal Briefs: Administrative Law: Gellhorn (Strauss, Rakoff, et.al.)
A great way to save money on study aids is to order a previous edtion.  Casebooks don’t generally change a lot, so you might be missing a couple of cases, but the cost savings is significant. Casenotes Legal Briefs have saved more than one unprepared law student's day when called upon in class by a Professor Kingsfield.  Fondly referred to as canned briefs, each Casenotes book includes briefs for all major cases in a specific casebook, case capsules, vocabulary and abbreviations.  The use of Casenotes Legal Briefs is discouraged by law school faculty because some students are seduced into relying on them rather than reading and briefing the cases themselves.  Students who fall prey to this trap fail to develop the reading, writing and analysis skills that are so critical to success with bar exams and the practice of law.  Stories of inaccurate briefs are legend.  Best use:  Checking your work when learning to brief cases.

Legalines: Administrative Law: Breyer
A hybrid of the law outline and case brief, Legalines offer a useful study aid for law students in that you are  introduced to the rule or doctrine in outline format and then given an illustration of the application of that rule or doctrine with a short brief of the applicable case from your casebook.  Note that to save space for the outline content, the briefs are shorter than those in Casenotes.  Best use:  Before exams to reinforce the basics and to associate the appropriate rule or doctrine with each case or fact pattern studied throughout the semester.  Legalines are articularly popular among students who are also working full-time while attending law school, because of their concise style.  Some students, however, find the outlines and the case briefs too brief and prefer a more extensive outline or hornbook and more in-depth casebriefs.   The case briefs in Legalines are also available on CD-ROM (Windows only).  See Gilbert Casebrief Software.

Understanding Administrative Law
The Understanding Series titles are treatises on a specific area of law.  They provide an in-depth discussion of the area of law and could be called paperback hornbooks.  This Understanding treatise helps both students and practitioners grasp the fundamental concepts of administrative law. It concentrates on the process of administrative decision-making rather than the substantive law of a particular agency.  While the book discusses the major cases and statutes covered in law school casebooks, it goes beyond a mere academic treatment of the subject. The author conveys a real-world sense of administrative law by presenting how a client's case moves through an agency and how a lawyer handles the various issues arising in administrative disputes. This text offers numerous suggestions on ways to identify and address administrative problems, and is therefore more helpful than commercial outlines and other study aids that merely paraphrase statutes or recite case holdings.  This text includes a significant amount of discussion on trends in administrative law such as deregulation and regulatory reform, and alternative dispute resolution. While the focus is on federal administrative decision-making, there is also some discussion of state administrative law.
